Today we’re sitting down with Lauryn Evarts, the absolute powerhouse and creator of The Skinny Confidential for a Q&A. Lauryn is someone who we have looked up to for years, not only for her tips and recommendations, but the brand she has created. She grew her blog into a successful and dynamic brand with millions of followers, that now includes a podcast, a book, a YouTube channel, and a few different products that we’ll get to and that you’ll need to get your hands on. We asked the audience to send in their questions for Lauryn and she is here to spill the tea, so let’s dive right in!
Best Lymphatic Drainage Locations in Texas?
The Road Acupuncture in Austin for facials and Alive & Well for body.
What does you ask for when getting her hair colored?
I ask for cool tones because I want to pop the whites of my eyes & teeth. I like super blonde highlights around my face & I don’t give a fuck about the underneath of my hair. I feel like it just damages it, so I tell them to just not touch that part. Sometimes I’ll put two tiny blonde extensions in the front to make it even more blonde. Right now, I’m loving a blunt cut. I feel like it helps my hair grow faster and feels chic. Also, I only color my hair when I really have to.
Would love to know more about how she has dealt with her thyroid problems.
First & most important thing is to get your levels checked by a hormone specialist. I went to see Dr. Shirley Elzinga in Beverly Hills. We took a ton of blood & did so many tests so she could do a full scope on my hormones & prescribed me what I needed to start supplementing with. This will be unique to each person.
The key here is I really wanted to look underneath the bed instead of just looking at the bed, know what mean? Once I did this I felt 1000 times better & lost 20lbs in a month. Highly recommend getting your hormones checked if you’re experiencing weight gain & fatigue.
Best pregnancy tips?
My top tip is to drown out the noise. I really didn’t ask too many questions & I followed my intuition and my body. I didn’t read books, obsess over apps or ask any questions. I was intuitive, did meditation and breathwork and let my body lead the way. I did the same thing during labor & had the most beautiful birth. But what the fuck do I know because I had the worst postpartum experience!
Being postpartum gave me anxiety & depression so I had to do a lot of different things to deal with that.
I also made sure I exercised every day of my pregnancy, and I was obsessed with having this psycho specific smoothie & bone broth every day. And this might sound insane, but I truly feel the smoothie & bone broth just really helped build Zaza’s foundation. I took care of myself with a lot of facial massage, ice rolling, body work, reading ( not pregnancy stuff ), solitude & quiet time.
And if all else fails just make sure you get yourself some Bump Suits. I gained 55 lbs ( a whole other story ) & Bump Suits saved me!
Top 3 products you could NOT live without?
THE SKINNY CONFIDENTIAL HOT MESS ICE ROLLER: It instantly depuffs & soothes. I use it as soon as I wake up, before I apply makeup & at night before doing my skincare routine. It stays cold for so long & helps contour & tighten.
BeautyBlenders: I use these for way more than just makeup. They’re great for applying caffeinated sunscreen, facial oils, concealer, like anything you put on your face, pretty much. Hot tip: make sure it’s damp for a dewy glow.
White Kindle: This has been life-changing for me. I’ve always loved to hold a real book like so many people, but finally getting a Kindle has helped me read so many more books. It’s so easy, lightweight & way better for your eyes than a phone or tablet.
Best new product or brand discovery of 2022?
These white Bose noise canceling headphones. The main reason being that I’m very big on meditation since my first pregnancy. I do 30 minutes a day, no matter what & these headphones really drown out the noise. In my house the toddler is always doing something, Bluey is on, coffee machine is going, my husband Michael is stomping around, so these really help me go inward.
I also love them for listening to podcasts when I’m traveling & watching shows on my iPad. Which brings me to my iPad/keyboard/pen situation. This whole setup has been so good for business & being creative. Here it is:
♡ Apple iPad Pro – 12.9 inch
The iPad is essential & I just can’t say enough good things about it. Over the years I’ve had a lot of iPads & this one is my favorite. Michael had it forever & I never really took to it until I had my own.
It’s like having a huge phone & it’s truly streamlined my life. I love watching Housewives on it in bed, in the dark, LOL. And I love writing my next book on it, I love returning emails on it, I love how easy it is to just open up & USE. I can’t say enough good things – highly recommend.
♡ Magic Keyboard
This is the keyboard that will change your life. It’s key! The white one matches cute with the silver iPad & like I said, you can just go from using the keyboard to using the touch screen of the iPad so everything is just EASY.
It’s easy on my fingers, it’s good for carpal tunnel & you can even put it on your laptop stand.
It’s also a cover/case so it protects your screen & it won’t get all fucked up in your purse or if you drop it. So if you’re a student, entrepreneur, artist or work in an office you will love this magic keyboard. Moving right along…
♡ Apple Pencil
This pencil is so great if you like to draw & sketch things out. I’m a horrible artist, but I’m very visual & like to draw things out, especially when it comes to designing new product. It helps me show my team what I’m picturing in my brain. You can use it to circle screenshots, sketch out designs, sign documents, write quick notes, markup PDFs & lots of other stuff.
Best piece of advice you ever received?
“I think the smartest people can explain things to a child. If you can’t explain it to a child, then you don’t know it” – Naval Ravikant
I know it’s not advice, it’s a quote, but I wanted to share it! This is a quote from a book called The Almanac of Naval Ravikant & it was recommended to me by Naomi Olindo. She was just on our podcast for the 2nd time & she told me about this when we went to dinner.
This quote resonates with me because I feel like simplifying things is a lost art. People overcomplicate everything & it creates more chaos. From an influencer perspective there is a real art to being able to write, market & post in a way that is easy on the consumer’s eyes & ears.
Marriage tips?
I have 2. The first being: DON’T SETTLE. Don’t settle for a partner just because society says you should be married & have kids at a certain age. If you’re planning on spending your life with someone you better like them & want a real partnership with them. Don’t settle for anything less than what you know you deserve.
My 2nd tip is to ‘know’ your partner. Over the years I’ve realized there’s a certain finesse that goes into relationships & dealing with each other’s moods & different situations. I don’t know how else to describe it except ‘finesse.’ For instance:
When Michael is stressed, hungry, tired, or overwhelmed I know how to handle him. Just the other day he was stressed about work & I knew that he needed to talk it out so that he could hear himself talk (& for me to listen, not give advice), then he needed to digest it so I took our daughter & the dogs & left the house. By the time I got back he had done thing, gotten the answers & solutions he needed & that was that.
This is not blanket advice, it’s situational and different for each couple. But knowing the ‘dance’ that you need to do with your partner is very important.
You are insanely productive and efficient, how do you maximize your time in a day?
I coordinate my Google calendar like a psycho!! Every single thing is color-coded, even reading time, driving time, & thinking time AND my workouts too. It holds me accountable.
I also batch tasks. For instance, Wednesdays are when I schedule all my phone calls. I check texts and emails for a certain amount of blocked time ( love a time cube for this ) & I do it all at once. I don’t want to be in the middle of a creative project & stop to check my phone every time it dings. The time it takes to refocus is such a waste. So a color-coded calendar, batching & time blocking are KEY when it comes to getting shit done.
I also schedule time with my daughter & my husband. This really helps me be more present when I’m spending time with them because I know all my important work commitments are scheduled for other times, so I don’t have to think about them when I’m relaxing with my family.
Hope you guys loved all these tips! Thank you so much to Elizabeth & Dale for having me.
